Ceiling-Suspended (Paddle) Fan Outlets

Article 370-27(c) of the National Electric Code requires ceiling fans to only be hung from boxes that are specifically identified for that purpose. A standard box is not designed to maintain support when the supported object vibrates.

370-27. Outlet Boxes

(c) Boxes at Ceiling-Suspended (Paddle) Fan Outlets. Outlet boxes shall not be used as the sole support for ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans.
Exception: Boxes listed for the application shall be permitted as the sole means of support.

Even some new homes are being built with the wrong boxes installed. During the rough inspection, the city inspector may not know that a ceiling fan is going to be installed at a particular location. Later, the box is covered, and he does not notice that the incorrect box was installed. There have been cases where fans have fallen when improperly installed.
